Royal Flying Doctor Service Australia – Karen’s Story

In 2016 the Royal Flying Doctor Services of Australia (RFDS) approached Start VR to produce an immersive 360 experience.

Their objective was to raise awareness of the vital service they provide to communities across Australia, and to generate additional revenue for them to continue their amazing work.

Start VR was honoured to be involved in such an important project, working closely with the team to craft a beautifully shot documentary style VR experience, that would truly take the users breath away.

Developed to give a first hand experience to educate schools, conference and event attendees around Australia, the ‘Keep the Flying Doctors Flying’ project was activated in October 2016, and launched publicly via The Flying Doctors YouTube 360° Channel.

The 4-minute premium 360 VR experience puts users directly into the world of the Flying Doctors as they join a scheduled clinic run, before suddenly being detoured to an emergency elsewhere.

Recounted by real life survivor Karen, and filmed over 2 days on location in Cairns, the experience takes viewers inside a working Flying Doctors plane with real-life response team members as it takes flight, following as Karen shares her near death experience.

The activation was incredible. We were inundated for three hours at the conference opening with people wanting to watch the VR and the feedback has been really really good. All of the Federation Staff have seen the experience and are very excited. Feedback from the CEO was that it is superb!

Many of those who watched the VR (who are remote emergency nurses) actually cried and said they were emotionally touched by the story and by the film. Many people enthusiastically state that it is incredible, far more than they had ever experienced, and that they felt completely “there”.
